Fishing for Lake Trout
The Gunflint area has the largest number of native lake trout lakes in the state, since their favorite habitat is the deep rocky lakes of northeastern Minnesota. The season opens in mid May and continues through the last day of September (which protects them during their spawning time). We fish them in shallow water for the first month or so before the water warms and they head deeper. We often use #11 rapalas for them for our shallow trolling.
They are not a schooling fish so we troll along our rocky shores, picking them up in a more random pattern. Rapala lures work well in the spring and then we move to spoons later in the summer.
