Fishing for Smallmouth Bass
The bass love our rocky shores and particularly where the drop offs are abrupt with large rocks. The bass season opens with the walleye in mid May and continues into the fall (except some areas of Canada where the season opens later). The bass spawn in early June so we often do some voluntary catch and release of the big ones before they drop their eggs. During the second and third weeks of June they are on their beds and provide the most exciting fishing of the year.
We generally cast silver #11 floating rapalas to them. They hit with a huge jump and then start to tear you apart if you are using light line. During July and August the bass move into deeper water (5-10 feet) where it is cooler and that is when we start to use our sinking baits.
