Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) Canoe Trips BWCAW
and Quetico Park canoe trip outfitting from the Gunflint Trail area

Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters Location

Northern Minnesota is home to the famous Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness -- the largest canoeing wilderness in the United States. There are over 1,000 clear water lakes in this million+ acre wilderness. It makes up the finest canoeing area available and is the only waterways wilderness in the national system.

The Gunflint Trail (a 60 mile paved road) is a corridor into Boundary Waters. It travels past a multitude of deep rocky lakes scoured out by glaciers centuries ago. Some of the waters flow to the Atlantic and some to the Arctic. This area has the finest lake trout fishing in mid America and is home to a significant moose population. The Gunflint Trail offers a variety of disbursed entry points, so canoeists can get into the wilderness quickly and without going down long and busy entry lakes. In addition, you have the beauty of the North Shore Drive along Lake Superior as you come north to the Gunflint.

Since no businesses are allowed to operate within the wilderness, all outfitters are located in the adjacent communities - the Gunflint Trail, Grand Marais, Ely, Crane Lake and Sawbill.  In general, about ½ the wilderness entry points are in the Gunflint area.  One huge advantage of the Gunflint entry points is how they are scattered, rather than bunched on crowded lakes.  Many of the Gunflint entry points only allow 2 or 3 permits per day, so you get an immediate wilderness feel right after you push off from the landing.

We are located 43 miles up the Gunflint Trail from the village of Grand Marais. You can see the BWCA right from our dock, which is a starting point for two of the wilderness canoe routes.  All the other entry points along the Gunflint Trail are within 15 to 20 minutes of us.  We take pride in being able to help you start your trip within minutes of leaving our base.
