Tow Boats on Saganaga and Gunflint Lakes

When entering the wilderness with an entry point on Saganaga Lake or going east from Gunflint Lake, some canoeists enjoy a faster start with a tow boat ride. Each tow boat has an overhead rack for one or two canoes and can accommodate up to 4 people and their gear. Here on the Gunflint side of the wilderness, entry points are very well distributed and there is no need for a tow boat service for most trips. Even on Saganaga and Gunflint, it is not a matter of getting away from a busy entry point with user congestion, but rather the concept of not having to paddle across your entry lake. As a consequence most of our guests paddle out from their put in landings.

But with that said, we offer tow boat services for any of our guests desiring this fast start. Trips with an entry at the west end of Saganaga lake, going into the Quetico Park, or starting on the border route at South Lake can save several hours of paddling their first day. We contract for these services from a neighboring business.. The costs range from $25 to $50 per person, depending on how many there are in your party and how far you take the tow boat.
